Thank you for the informtion, Tom.
I also checked arlenstudio for their custom TT. They actually provide a mould to customer so that customer do not need to go to their studio. This makes oversea order possible. Do you/will you do it in similar way? |

I have found that the moulding process is something that can be carried out from a distance...with a bit of luck but the materials I use aren't the type of materials that someone without experience could generate a good mould from, not to fit my purposes anyway.
That's only the first step in a long and exacting process. The fitting and shaping of the cast are critical and the final painting makes all the difference. It is that final stage that either makes or breaks the the whole procedure. I cannot say with any great certainty that I can match skin tones from afar. That is why I do not offer such a procedure. Other issues are price and availability. I take on commissions but very infrequently at this time. Each tip is hand made by me and I have limited time to carry out the work along with my regular work on special effects projects. My price reflects the amount of hours I put into clients custom props. It may suit you better to look to Arlen Studios for your custom tip, especially if they can offer good results without having to make a visit for matching.

Okay, these look awesome; I'm amazed by Tom's artistic work and craftsmanship. You can tell that he's an artist.
But I have to ask the practical question, is a $174 or $125 (Arlen) TT really necessary? I mean, I've performed thousands of effects with Vernet Vinyl TT and even have given up on the Thumbs-Up TT for the less expensive Vinyl Vernets. I've never been "caught" since I use the TT as a hidden utility device. If the TT wears out or gets dirty I toss them out and use a new one, I can even damage them and not feel at all bad about it. All right, TT's aren't one size fits all, but plastic and Vinyl can be molded and stretched. I almost think the idea of a perfect TT seems a lazy way out, I mean are you going to stick it up in the air waggle it and say "Hey look, no TT!" How will using this TT make my magic and better or stronger? I guess I'm a little old school on this and I should ask myself that question before buying any magic trick, prop or gaff. Tom, no offense to you or your work, which, I think, is really exquisite. (at least from the photos)

Depend on what you used it for. How about a close up, empty hand PK effects with this "invisible" TT. It will even fool magician. And a lot of other closeup tricks can be done with "real" magic feeling.

It really is a matter of personal choice. My TTs are expensive but that is reflected in the outcome (maybe that is for others to confirm!).
I know of a few performers who are being very bold with them and other things I have made so who knows where it will stop?

LOL!
Thanks for that. I do roll my eyes when I see real artificial limbs and reconstructive prosthetics. It is clear that very knowledgable technicians build these, however, they don't look to be "artists". The attention to colour and shape often misses the mark.

Hi CC,
Matching skin colour at any distance is very very difficult indeed. Skin tones change when a person holds their hand above waist level or down at their side, or if the air temperature is cold or hot. I have matched skin tones that look perfect in a room but under daylight it looks very different. Matching the tone and colour of living skin with that of inorganic plastic is a very difficult task even when the person is right in front of you...by long distance is nearly impossible. It can be done but luck plays a part as well as skill. I have yet to be happy enough with the results. AND I'm sooo booked up with clients now I won't have a day off for about 20 years!!!! LOL I wish I could help but at the moment it would be unrealistic to try. Thanks for asking though...I'm flattered.

Anyone else you know of from your contacts in "the industry" who you could recommend on this side of the pond ? |

I will call a few people and see what I can come up with.
Someone who has the technical skills and the "eye" for realism is key but so is someone who ALSO knows magic and magic props applications. THAT'S the tricky combo...but I will chat to a few of my contacts.
