Hi devilix,
I agree with what bro babakali says. Don't wait too long. The longer the wait, the more faded the image will become, and there's nothing worse than building this up for the revelation and have nothing there. I wouldn't wait more than 5 minutes before performing this effect. The best way to figure out how long to wait is to just (carve) the image into your arm with the toothpick and then time it to see how long it stays on your skin. It will vary from person to person. I have fairly dry skin, so it stays on me for about 5 to 7 minutes then slowly fades away. What I do like about it is that after the first minute or two, it starts to take on a "red" image, if you will. Like the spirits have made their mark onto your flesh and revealed what the card is. Just play with it before performing and you will know how long you can wait before performing. But I believe it is best to do while the mark is somewhat "fresh". Phil

I've tried using lip balm stick and experimented on sugar, salt, pepper, dust and even dishwasher powder soap. They all stick and are effective.

Right, but this was just a version myself, and Phil came up with so that one could perform the stunt when none of your aforementioned tools were available...but in any case, youre right, lip balm especially works good for me, and could be considered at least semi-impromptu. thanx

As an added bonus, you could trace the scratch mark with some stage blood on a q-tip and let it dry. If you don't have stage blood, you can make your own using Karo corn syrup and red food coloring with a touch of black for a deeper color. Just use your imagination and have fun with it creating your own unique routines.

I've been using a temporary tattoo.
There are these henna kits available online and in some beauty supply stores. They work great and hold up very well under sleeves. I've even covered them with gauze as if I had just been tattooed that afternoon and show the spectator the amazing coincidence. It';s pretty cool.. Cashetta |

I've been working with this for several years now, and the messages above are missing the best part! You *want* the image to fade before doing the trick! I first learned the seed of this method in Will Dexter's "131 Magic Tricks for Amateurs" from 1958, then took it from there. It's amazing the inspiration you can get in a $1 book from the used bookstore
A PDA stylus works great for leaving the "image." Any low-numbered red spot card will work. I press quite hard, and usually draw four diamonds in playing-card-layout in the middle of my left forearm. You don't want to break the skin, but rather compact the flesh behind it. This is why the stylus works so well. It's only moderately uncomfortable to do, and does not cause permanent damage. Now *wait* awhile for the image to fade. After the image has faded, if you firmly press or rub with your hand on your arm, the image will reappear in red, even quite some time later - an hour later is usually no problem for me. Also, as long as your hand is actually pulling the skin tight, the image is invisible, but as soon as you release your hand, blood flows to the previously compacted area and whatever you drew becomes visible. I start with my sleeves down. I force the 4D when the time is right, and have my spec hold it face down in front of them. I tell them that because of my constant handling of playing cards, the more sensitive areas of my skin have developed an allergic reaction to the card ink. Under the guise of pulling up my left sleeve, I firmly press down on my left forearm with my right hand, and while maintaining pressure, bring my right hand all the way up to the crotch of my elbow. Everyone can see the middle of my left forearm, but because I'm pulling the skin above it tight with my right hand, the card image is not visible. I position my left arm directly under the card my spec is holding and immediately release my skin. To anyone watching, all it looks like I've done is push up my left sleeve and put my arm under the card. Now it's time for acting - I pretend I can feel the allergic reaction - it burns, I wince, etc. I ask the spec to pull back their card. I look at my arm, pretend I'm trying to decipher the image on it, and then announce their card. When they turn their card over, it really gives the creepy illusion that somehow the image has transferred to my arm. It definitely gets reactions! Hope you have as much fun with this as I've had, Doug |

I wouldn't have thought of using a PDA stylus for such a thing (though I don't carry one, and every time I see "PDA" I'm just old enough, that in my head it still registers as "public display of affection".... which you have a stylus for.Hmmm.):) I learned this at Banachek's lecture last September at Magic in the Rockies, and it's a shocker, that's for sure. I use my fingernail. I've waited and had the impression work as long as half an hour later, and my favorite number to force is seven because on my pale, fish-belly-white arm, that looks the best. I tend to do the reveal just by opening and closing my hand, because then the red seven just slowly appears on the skin and there's no suspicion that I did something sneaky with the other hand, because it never touched it. I haven't done this trick a lot, but now I'm inspired. It's been so fun reading about how everyone presents this. What a great thread! Wendy

Anyone looking for this in print can have a look at Body magic by John Fisher. Originally performed by a fake spirit medium by the name of Charles foster. Very interesting to see who uses magicians techniques!

I don't have the Banacheck method; my ideas above were all from the Will Dexter book I referenced and some experimentation. I'd almost have to guess, though, that it would have appeared in Swami/Mantra, which I don't have. Just a guess...anyone know for certain?

I've done a trick like this but I got a small container of skin tone lipstick and write the force card on the palm of my hand. I ask the spectator to take out a coin from her purse and keep it tight in her hand. I then grab her hand impressing the lipstick onto the back of her closed fist while I attempt to guess what the date is. I get it correct after a simple coin switch and move on to the type of trick we're all talking about but instead of pouring the ashes on my hand I pour it on hers. I say I have trouble reading the ashes, used too much...so I blow it off and there on the back of her hand is the card. I've done this a few times and one girl sat there staring at me and her hand for a solid three or four minutes. It's really great!

Baba, (if I may call you baba for short ,
Since you mentioned pencil lead, I wonder if using the eraser end would work ? I'd try myself, but I don't want to go burning anything right now. The eraser does appear to leave a residue though. I also like the pyromaniac (I think that's the one) effect, whereby you form blisters that reveal the card... or number, or whatever you've forced. Certain Ilco keys have a familiar pattern (or several, actually, depending on how you look at it) in the design at the base of the key, that could be of use -
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Since we're getting away from it being impromptu.. I;d like to share my take on this awesome trick.. Pyro perception is a trick where a card is picked and a lighter is taken out.. you apparently burn your fingers and you have a blister on each finger of the card.. really cool... but a little akward to do..
I made myself a kind of stencil.. its a piece of plastic with 3, then the club sign cut out of it. I have an elastic around it so it stays on your fore arm the whole time you perform under your sleeve.. when you are ready, simply lift your sleeve along with the plastic gimmick and you have this AWESOME impression that looks like its buldging out of your arm.. I never liked the ash trick.... cause after all... we're rubbing ashes all over ourselves.. I am a smoker and I even find this disgusting.. I think the only appropriate time for the ash revelation trick is camping with friends.. enjoy |

Lipstick sounds way too messy.
Has anyone tried using baby powder? It won't show up as well as ashes but it would depend on your complexion and how close you are.
