Out of curiosity, is there any kind of directory of brick-and-mortar magic stores within the US? Ordering online is getting a bit boring, and I'd love to actually be able to go to a store and look around, while supporting a local vendor. In particular, I'm wondering if there are any stores in the Kansas City area?

All you have to do is get your yellow pages, and look up "Magic." Some cities don't have a magic directory, so you can try "Novelty Shops," but they tend to have a very limited selection.

You may want to contact the Magic Dealers Association for a listing of member shops. They mostly deal with brick and mortar type stores. Not all dealers are members however as not all stores have web sites making even the internet limited in scope.
The idea of putting a national directory together has been brought up before but there is no money in doing so, it would entail looking through every phonebook in major cities, then checking for accuracy etc. A huge chore to write and not sure how big a seller it would be. Same is true of an internet clearing house of lectures. Be great to have but harder than %#@* to get it done and keep it updated.

Phone books more often than not (frustratingly) have entries for "Magicians" but no "Magic Supply" or whatever, and it seems like only the larger, well-established dealers like Hank Lee's would have a website to accompany their real store. I may keep hacking away at the yellow pages and see what I can find. |

Kansas City area....U.S.Toy is the largest (square footage that is) magic shop west of Mississippi--so they used to advertise. Located off Hiway 435 and State Line Rd. You'll find all that you need there.

Authorized magic dealers are available in MAGIC magazine- meaning it lists on places who sell the magazing, but it's still a good place to view the, 'true shops.' Check you yellow pages also- that's always one of the first things I do when I go out of state. Keep in touch!

It is difficult to just consult the yellow pages when looking for a magic shop because dealers tend to come and go with rapidity.
There are exceptions, of course. For example, Jim Henson in Little Rock has a very large inventory and has been in business for more than 25 years. Hank Lee, Joe Stevens, Dick Stoner, are, also among those who have defied the odds. Unfortunately, however, most magic shops do not stay in business much longer than the first or second lease renewal. Some of the exceptions to this general rule are small home-based shops without rent and payroll expenses to meet. These shops may or may not have a yellow page listing, but they sometimes have very large inventories that equal or surpass the better known shops. I travel a lot and enjoy visitng as many shops along the way as possible. One trick I have learned is to look in, "The Linking Ring," magazine, which often lists the telephone numbers of officers in various IBM rings across the country. They are usually informed about any shops in their area and will be glad to let you know when the local clubs meet and if any lectures are scheduled. (I mean, you would hate to spend the night in the Holiday Inn in Kokomo knitting socks, when your favorite magi is lecturing nearby.) Ed Hutchison |
