Greetings and Salutations koz,
I've got mine as well. Acquired it several years ago after learning who Cellini is and his reputation. While I have acquired an extensive library of books, notes, etc. on working on the streets, and by no means impuning those authors, The Royal Touch, in my estimation, is the first and last word on working the streets. If I can only take one book, this is the book I take. It covers it all, from gathering an audience, to passing the hat, and a wealth of tricks and routines besides. That's my $.02 (USD) worth. YMMV. (It should go without saying that Blaine-impersonators and wannabes should pass this book by. It's intended for buskers and is also applicable to those who work fairs, festivals and like shows and venues.) koz, how much are you asking, and what's the US shipping cost? Step right up, boys, no crowding, now! Place your orders. I found this description from an old post: Cellini, The Royal Touch -- Here is one of magic's most sought after books. Cellini is a true legend in the performance of magic. This 188 page hardbound book covers the work of this famous magician. His tips on Street Performing are priceless and the effects are the epitome of "pure magic." Contents include Where to Work the streets, Street Performer's Workshop and Tools (including the famous Cellini Topit), How to actually perform on the street, Law of the Street, Bibliography of Card Books, a collection of great black & white photos AND the effects and routines. Just read this list of effects: Vanishing Silk, Birth of a Rose, Thumb Tip Tips, Thumb Tip Drop Steal, Sugar Bag, Vanishing Cigarette, Wand of Merlin Flip Stick Routine, The Wand Spin, Infinity Cups (Water appearance in bowls), Bill in Lemon, Bill to Wallet, Cups & Balls Routine One, Cups & Balls Routine Two, Paper Bag Routine, Here's Mickey (mouse production), Fire Eating, An Escape Act, Vanishing Glass, Grapefruit Production, Cellini Sponge Ball Routine, Indestructible Handkerchief, Cigarette Routine, T-Bar Glass Vanish, Three Ring Switch, Lord of the Rings Linking Ring Routine, Six Ring Routine, Cut & Restored Rope, Card Manipulations, Jumbo Coin & Handkerchief Routine, Color Changing Coin, Copper Silver Routine, Coin Juggling, Cascade of Coins from Cards, Coins in Glass, Billiard Ball Work, The Miser's Dream. I must say that this book probably contains more usable material for real life work that most books I have ever read. A true classic in magic!!! Hardbound By McFalls. E.M. One of my favorites as well, not just for the tricks (which are great) but for all the information and insight from a true busker and street performer.
I got mine straight from Koz; shipped quickly and a good price... I'd say if you are or have been considering it -- just go for it... while the chance is here. Chuck

Koz,
You can open a bank account, get a debit card, and start a paypal. I made $800 bucks last week and I do not have any product. That was just yard sale junk from around my house. You are crazy not to do it very, very, soon. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! How were the hats in NO this year? Was the weather any good? I couldn't get loose to go down this year, but the weather last year when I was there was awful.
Glad you are back. BroDavid

I searched out The Royal Touch and finally found a copy. I think I got it from H&R books. It is definitely worth it, in spite of some of the rather unusual wordings, which definitely were not Cellini's fault.
I got Jim to autograph it when he was in Houston. The lecture was excellent, BTW. Marianne did a turn -- a nice silk production.

I got a copy from Zauberladen a few months ago. It seemed to take FOREVER to ship from Switzerland to here. If you haven't yet added this book to your collection, do so now! Ted's done all the hard work for us already, and the price is right(by the time I paid international shipping, Ted's offer came to about $20 less than I paid).

This is a problematic and frustrating, if unusual, volume. At first glance, with its oversized dimensions and sumptuous illustrations, it appears to be an utterly beautiful magic book. At this price it should be. Visually the book is a scrapbook of an inarguably interesting life, with photographs and drawings, sketches and doodlings, a monochromatic kaleidoscope of visual impressions. Upon further investigation, however, we find that it has been written by someone who lacks a first language, or if they have one it bears little relation to English. Nary a page goes by without a multitude of typos, grammatical tragedies, spelling disasters, and name mangling. The book is a mess.
The first 31 pages may be worth the price of purchase to anyone who has a serious interest in street magic, because these few pages provide almost the sum total of meaningful writing on the subject in the literature of conjuring. Sample openings and closings are provided, along with commentary on pitching for money when you pass the hat. In additional to the appalling language and typography errors already mentioned, the descriptions of the magic vary from thoroughly described and illustrated to completely incoherent. In several places there are references to illustrations that do not exist. In other places there are no such references but illustrations are desperately needed nonetheless in order to make sense of the terse prose. For example, there is a comedy sequence with a paper bag, significant portions of which (not the least of which is the basic prop) are rendered incomprehensible due to the lack of illustrations and clear description. An extensive segment on the Linking Rings contains amongst the best material in the book, beginning with some interesting key ring handlings designed to display the ring while concealing the key. Here are some examples typical of the often flourishy and flashy nature of street work; most formal presentations of the trick would tend to be more restrained these days by comparison. I know that Cellini is a great street worker. No argument I also know that he is beloved by many who have had the chance to experience his genuine warmth, generosity and common-man touch. I also know that no thoughts can excuse a purchaser's hard-earned without making even the slightest attempt to minimally edit and proofread a book like this. If you want to do street work, at least get your hands on the first 31 pages. If not, save your money for publishers (and authors) who show you, the buyer, a modicum of respect. Ronnie Lemieux

Well see, one of the problems was when the book was published in Switzerland, from Zauberladen Zürich. So they translated from English to German and back to English and I think the lost part went something a little wrong. The German books are perfect.Tthat's one point, another point is, for me there could be a mistake in every single word, it doesn't matter for me, as far as you understand what he means. I did not know you, what kind of magician you are, but I can tell you in this book is more stuff like in all others. Don't get blind about a few wrong words. I hope you don't count my wrong words, then I am a Swiss German speaking man, and every single English word is a fight for me. Greetings René |

I can not tell you how strongly I disagree with Ronnie on this.
Yes, there are spelling and typographical errors galore. That is not why I bought the book. This book was written for working, professional, magicians, who wanted to go out on the street and make money. One of the tricks I do on the street is the vanishing, color changing silks. I have had several magic guys come up to me and ask where that is from. I say "The Royal Touch" and they say, "Not in my copy!" Well, they don't know how to read it. Because a handkerchief can be substituted for a rose and if you are working the street a handkerchief works better. Now, that sentence is probably confusing a lot of you. Some others are chuckling because I am making the big assumption that you 1. know about magic and 2. know about the trick in The Royal Touch to which I am referring. This is the style in which The Royal Touch is written. It assumes you know magic and do not need your hand held while describing a double lift. When I bought The Royal Touch I had plenty of questions. But instead of calling the book junk, I went out to knowledgeable people and asked for clarification (This is one place I used). This thing we do, this craft, this art, whatever you want to call it should not be "easy to master." I bought Cellini's book and I had to study to understand it and not because it was poorly written but because he was talking to me like I was at his level. This book was written for pros. For all of its blemishes, misspellings, and typographical errors, it is still the master work on the subject of street performing. The David Groves book on street magic is written by a professional writer and is a technically well written book. It lacks any typos, or misspellings. It also contains very little useful information on using magic to perform on the street. In my opinion that book is a worthless piece of junk. But then again, I am basing my opinion on trying to use the material contained within to go out on the street and make a living. I was not reading it in my arm chair and grading it like a high school English paper. It is about the practical content, not the spelling. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! If you garner just one thing from the book and use it in your act for cash, then you have more than doubled the outlay.
This is the finest work I have come across on the subject of street entertaining. If any care to knock such an expert's lifetime work put on paper such as this, then I shall truly look forward to their donations to this art. Re: the production, should it go on public sale (God help us). Then maybe your point is valid. As such it was done for a select clientel of which you should be honored to be one. Unless you can offer equally, then I suggest put up or shut up!! |

Gotta go with Danny on this one... I've read the Royal Touch literally hundreds of times and learn something new each time I do. It's not about the spelling, but the effects, ideas, stories, and inspiration that are between the covers.
