Hi Gordon,
You seem to spend a lot of time working out what most of us would call "self working" effects. I thought it would be interesting if you would share why the focus on effects that require such minimal manipulation. Also, I wanted to know whatever happened to that effect "The Third Eye" which you showed me many years ago? Dave |

I like the rigorous conditions. Even if it might be a better solution, you can't just do a pass to get a card where you want. And then I like the challenge of justifying the odd procedures sometimes associated with these effects. The Third Eye was an effect that I slipped into the end of a Genii article about the launch of Penumbra, the magazine put out by Bill Goodwin and me. After talking about a get-together at the Penumbra, I just slid into describing an effect where a spectator deals down one face-down card for every letter in "The Third Eye" (or "Magic Castle" or "Bill Goodwin"), then deals the resulting packet back and forth into two face-down piles until one card remains. The spectator looks at this card, places it on either pile, then places the other pile on top. The magican and the spectator alternately spell the letters of the trick's title, with the magician starting with "t," the spectator saying "h," and so on. Every time the magician says a letter, the spectator turns over the top three cards of the packet as a unit and puts them on the bottom of the packet; every time the spectator says a letter, he or she places the top three cards as a unit on the bottom of the packet without turning them over. During this procedure the cards will be seen to be mixed face up and face down, but once the last letter is spelled, the packet may be spread to show the only face-down card is the selection, standing out as if seen by a mystical third eye.
