Instead of asking what you like to do at tables, my question is what don't you do, and why?
Should start an interesting discussion. Kevin |

Counting tricks, arguing with the patrons, throwing up on their food, making rude comments about people's clothing... oh, you mean what tricks?! oops!
Counting tricks, anything that takes a long time to do such as a seance effect, blindfold work (too cumbersome), balloons (had a bad experience where a kid almost aspirated one and came close to choking to death right in front of me - and it wasn't even my balloon!), snowstorm in china (little flakes of paper in people's dinners makes them mad at you), shoes on table (Jay Marshall) as it's unhygenic (unless at an Ambassadorial Ball and it's been requested - true story), card sword (too cumbersome, doesn't reset fast enough), tricks with food (other than a TT salt pour) or anything with bugs, like a Docc Hilford bit with plastic flies or that thing with the fake spider...). For me, it has to be fast, high impact, resets quickly (or doesn't need to reset) and makes them laugh. Hope this helps! Lee Darrow, C.H.

I have held off on card to ceiling. I would not want the cards to fall onto their or someone elses plates. Or even just hit them. As far as balloons I believe it has been proven that a 260 will NOT choke someone because of the shape. It is the round balloons that will block the throat and stop the air.
Nothing of the same will bring any change, take action today!

I don't produce David Blain close up, cos that would be considered too much I feel? I would also not perform something like sawing a dog in half with a borrowed handbag, its just not in good taste now is it?

Would a card stab routine be appropriate?

Best advertising gimmick on Earth. Sure every once in awhile one would fall, but it wasn't a big deal for anyone involved. It was actually looked upon as a huge family tree/photo album. ("There's mine from the Halloween party." ... "That's my ex-husband's. Can you knock it down?") Now as for the shape of a 260, while it may not choke someone, it's the perfect shape to garrote them with it. (shame on me...)

Flourish dude, it was a 260 that the kid choked on. The idea that someone can't choke on one is a myth. Shape has little to do with - it's all mass - and the kid was a near-infant, the parents let him have the balloon and it went right into his mouth (as all things do at that age) and POP! Instant lawsuit.
Sorry to disagree, but I was the one who managed to do the Heimlich on him (a variation because of his size) and was lucky enough that it worked. Lee Darrow, C.H.

I do a lot of balloon sculpture with 260's and will not give one to a child under 3 yrs old. Too dangerous. But, to answer the original query, I do not do anything with mouth coils or card from mouth or anything from mouth. Too disgusting if people are eating. (I have seen some magicians do it though.)

One that doesn't leave a mess of cards is appropriate, for example the effect entitled "A Stab in the Dark" on the DVD Wanted! the outlaw magic of LONNIE CHEVRIE - volume 1, or the effect entitled "Diving Fork" on the DVD 10 O'Clock Show by Scott Alexander. Scott's effect is perfect for restaurant work as it uses a fork and napkin. Now back to the original question. What don't I do at a table? I don't do a table dance, no matter how much the female spectators beg. |

I stay away from stacked decks myself, far too many people ask if they can shuffle the cards, and not just at the beginning either, I had one guy ask to shuffle them before I finished the last trick at the table, so I stay clear of tricks that need any set up.
Long poker routines tend to be out too, I want to be able to finish at any point when the food comes. I do pickpocketing, but I stay away from wallets, I would love the reactions and the practice (lord knows I need it) but I can't have people saying that they are missing money and can't afford to pay for the meal. |

Anything with lots of counting, or dealing piles onto the table. I also tend to stay away from effects that are unclear or have more than 2 kicker endings. The best advice I ever received was: "A great trick is one that can be summed up in one sentence and sound amazing". I LOVE kicker endings but they have to make sense...in my opinion if an effect has more than 2 kickers as the utmost max then the effect is more than likely unclear and I usually won't do it at my restaurant.

No PK fx for me (long story). No thread fx unless you've got prepared back-ups (another long story).
In the shadows, just on the edge of your nightmares. That's where you'll find me.

In all seriousness. I would not perform an efefct which required long term concentration. I always make sure my set can be bvroken up into efefcts and be stopped at any time. Reason being that if the food is suddenly served you want to be able to leave that table just as amazed as if you had been able to concude your set.
Another no-no for me is somethign which takes up a great deal of room such as the classic matrix (coins under cards), the last thing I want to be doing is clearing away plates to create a performance area. K

Yeah definitely know your ceiling. My restaurant has hardwood ceilings with picture frames and paintings on it looking down. Nobody really notices them. I always make sure before I do card on the ceiling I'm positioned in the right spot. For me it's one of the strongest effects out there that keep people coming back. I do it almost 5 or 6 times a night at my restuarant.
