I just saw this http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=962
Apparently it is a rip off of mr. Lovick's famous routine. There already is a video and a book of the Reparation out there and I doubt Penguin has bought any rights to it from MagicSmith.
Mucho gusto. Como estás?

I would expect they would have to. Its not like penguin have just cloned the trick and given it a new name. Its the exact same footage on the original video.
Also. magicsmith doesn't seem to list the reparation video at all on their website, so maybe they have bought the rights.

How can it be a ripp off if they list it as Lovick's Reparation?

I think Penguin bought all the rights to MagicSmith's stuff! Nothing dodgy going on here.

In response to paolomagic who wrote:
"I doubt Penguin has bought any rights to it from MagicSmith" You "doubt"? How about ensuring you're on a bit more solid ground before starting a new thread under the title "Reparation rip off by Penguinmagic"?

(Sadly) Nothing wrong going on here, Penguin Magic has all the rights to Magic Smiths items (Hence the release of Greg Wilsons items through them).
Thanks! Scott B.

Correction:
Penguin and Chris Smith did collaborate (possibly still do), but Chris Smith and The MagicSmith are still very much alive and active within the magic community. I don't know if the sleeve will have Pengiun's logo on it or not (as I do not know who has the rights), but I think it's a slick marketing idea to have custom sleeves made, whether you have the rights, or just purchase from a jobber.
Your choices in life can be compared to watching a magic trick: You can continue to believe the illusion in front of you, find the intrigue and desire to learn more, or quit paying attention the moment you feel deceived.

Hi guys,
At Penguin Magic we always act ethically and legally when it comes to putting out new magic. We're one of the world's best resources for magic inventors looking to make some money marketing their effects. If you have an effect or material for a DVD that you might be interested in marketing, give us a call. We work with the best, and we're very interested in new talent. We know that a lot of you underground guys have a ton of potential. If that's you we'd love the chance to work together. Give me a call anytime at my office 702-734-3333 or on my cell 702-326-0970. In the case of Reparation we purchased the rights from Magic Smith. Reparation is now available on DVD exclusively through Penguin Magic USA and Penguin Magic Europe. Maybe if boards like the Café and others quit taking money for advertising they would have no place to advertise and maybe they won't stay in business.

Is magicsmith and magicmakers the same? I did not know Rob was apart of magicsmith.
Nothing of the same will bring any change, take action today!

No, Magicsmith and Magic Makers are 2 different companies. Both are associated with penguin though.
Thanks! Scott B.

LOL.
This section of the forum has become a competition of whom finds the most rip-offs. Some thinking would tell you this is not a rip-off since Mr. Lovick is on the demo.

Maxwell is a pretty decent guy. I came out with an effect some time ago (pre- Penguin bashing days) and he was very helpful in getting it on the market. He was helpful many ways including supplies and shipping of the finished product. I will be contacting him soon after field testing a new effect I finished several months back.
All of our agreements regarding the effect were verbal, so he could have easily screwed me over if he was so inclined. I found him, however, to be a friendly helpful person and a man of his word. Thanks. Jeff |

I do get sick of hearing people complain about all the rip-offs--even though this is not one. if you think it is a rip off or are skeptical- don't BUY IT! Or atleast ask the dealer and let them know your concern.
I have asked Penguin about this product-- It doesn't include the newer material from the booklet Reparation Redux: The Directors Cut. It contains the original routine from the old Video. I may pick it up.

Yes, this is the old video converted to DVD. Penguin Magic bought the rights to the video from MagicSmith (though MagicSmith IS still in business) and converted it to DVD.

Penguin is definatly a rip off company. I am afraid of them. I hope that when I start to shop my effect around, it will not be stolen by them. I would personaly drive to there office and handle biz... that's whats good...

There is nothing wrong with Penguin selling this DVD. It's the same thing that happened when Greg Wilson's "On the Spot" 2-video set (Magic Smith) came out more recently on DVD through Penguin. They bought the rights to sell the new item, fair and square. There is no ripoff here.

Tim is right, Penguin bought the rights to all magic smith videos. Why do you think they carry all Greg Wilsons dvds with the penguin logo on it. People need to get there facts right before they make posts that show they know nothing about what they are talking about.
