As a part time job as a lighting designer, I have picked up a leading show choir from an adjacent city. The choir is extremely talented and is known around the country for its excellence in competition. This year, the director would like to have backdrops for their competitions. They already travel with their risers and are willing to bring more equipment for a "spectacular backdrop." When I first started researching the idea, the spider flex backdrop system caught my attention at magicauction.com. The price however, did not get me too excited. I love the super-fast appearence of the effect and the sheer compactness that the device achieves when closed. If anyone has any ideas to recreate these characteristics (or can sell me a spider-flex for super cheap) I am open to any suggestions. Some basic facts: the risers are 32' wide when assembled and the top step is 5' off the ground, so naturally the backdrop doesn not need to be behind the risers where no one will see it. The device also needs to be able to change fabric for each song. There is tech crew available to rip or flip a switch for the change. Thirdly, the fabric would ideally be sewn and prepared by one of the many able parent volunteers.
I realize these are large demands, but I hope that someone can shed some light on my difficult problem. Thanks!! Sincerely, Nick Van Houten

I use aluminum stands designed for photography backdrops. I got mine from a puppetry company, but there are other places. Just do a search on backdrop stands.
Mine came from a company called One Way Stret. Because of the way their site uses frames, I can't give you a link directly to the right page in their site. Go to onewaystreet.com, and click on online store, performance equipment, Staging & Curtains. It is listed as the "Deluxe Tripod Set". I like how adjustable this type of setup is. It can be adjusted anywhere from 4 1/2 to 8 feet in height, and from 4 1/2 to over 12 feet in width. |

I too was looking at the spider flex system on Magic auction, the price was just too high to even consider.
