Good idea Tony...
I heard US was only going to give 45 million but people threw up their arms and they made in 450 million. A buck and a half each. |

I had different thoughts as to why this occurred. The loss of so many was one of the worlds worst in recent history. You couldn't escape hearing about it..on the news, newspapers, radios, everyone was talking about it.
When 911 occurred many sent their condolences to the US and you saw many of them, as there is a huge representation at the Café. I passed by hundreds of US flags being flown in front of Canadian homes and candles lit in the windows in honor of the victims of 911.There were many memorials and tributes paid all across our cities. Many European countries held services and laid flowers at the US embassey as well. The entire world was shocked by the occurance. I worked in NY only 6 months after it happened and could still feel the effects at that time. Back to the Tsunami..You can't escape hearing about it,no matter what country you reside in. Last night Holland announced it was donating 150 million..the country has a population of 16.3 million! Every single effort from any country is to be commended. It's like crediting Bill Gates for donating millions but overlooking the person on welfare whom donates five dollars. We'd probably hear more about it at the Café if there were more members from that part of the world. I have no doubt about that. The lack of people talking about it isn't one of less caring as we've been inundated with so much around us. That's why I think people haven't been discussing it..not lack of caring but one of shock and probably talking about it amongst family and friends. |

Just had bad news about my donation of time. My doctor has said the course of vaccines and such will take 6 weeks (I thought I was still covered) so I have put that idea to rest. I am now going to try and donate my time in england to help with the logistical problems.

This massive disastor barely raised a ripple. Is it that most of the predominantly western Café members don't care when it doesn't affect people like them? Maybe. We can all be thoughtless. If more americans would have died in the Souteast asia tsunami maybe more would post about it. A similar thing in Sweden some time ago, I don't know how long time ago: In Bangladesh 200 000-300 000 people died in floods, but it did not get much attention in the swedish papers. Mikael |

I am using this message a second time here.
If anyone says to me the USA is self-centred and not caring I just remind them of a place I've been to. I visited Normandy in France. Did the museums, paid my personal respects at quite a few British and Commonwealth war cemeteries. Also called in a cemetery situated just on top of what was known as Omaha Beach. I'd say to anyone - just go there! Then never, EVER, say that this Country doesn't give! Tony. |

Very true Tony...
I was referring to the lack of aid from the US government and not the people. |

A week later and the topic is all but forgotten...
Its said that people give more and are more affected by the disastor if the person looks like them and has a similar culture. |
