Was the battle on December 13,1862?
Try Christopher’s Illustrated History of Magic and Constance Bayer’s The Great Wizard of the North. The latter states that Anderson left New York on December 16, 1862 bound for Europe, was in Canada in late September and early October, 1862, and implies that he gave his last performance in North America on October 6, 1862. Good luck with your research. |

If that were the case, then he would have left well before the Battle of Fredericksburg, which took place around December 14th and 15th.
I do know that Anderson left the US in a financial mess due to the lack of respect he received in the South due to his monicker, "The Great Wizard Of The North". Rick

If I'm not mistaken, there were a couple of impersonators who also performed under his name.

Have gotten some great stuff so far on the wizard of the north. local rcords do indicate that he was performing here just before the battle.

It's conceivable that he performed there on the 13th and traveled by train to New York. That's about the only way he could have sailed from New York on the 16th, and that's assuming that there was train service from Fredericksburg to New York.
I just checked The Annals of Conjuring. He was back in England by Christmas of 1862. I'm not sure how long the cruise from New York to London was, but this gives some information. Also pointed out is the large number of imitators there were. It is a distinct possibility that the "Wizard of the North" performing in Fredericksburg was an imposter.

Also, I found out recently there was a Professor Anderton (not AnderSon) that was performing in the states at that time...could have been him.
I found this on the Magical Past-times site... "The Wizard of the North" was effective billing for John Henry Anderson, the great Scottish sorcerer, until he played Richmond, Va. in December, 1860. There the word "North" so inflamed secessionist sympathizers that his bills were ripped down and the wizard was soon forced to beat a hasty retreat north of the Mason and Dixon line. "The Wizard of the North," of course, referred to his native Scotland in the north of the British Isles and not to his prowess in the Yankee states. Anderson's projected tour of the South was cancelled and 85,000 worth of elaborate billing matter, which had already been sent to other secessionist states had to be abandoned."
