"The Disney Channel" every month produces low budget, low quality, movies of low interest called "Disney Channel Original Movies". I normally don't care for them, or the Disney channel, but when flipping through the TV the other day, I saw a magician holding up cards, and he asked the viewer to pick one (then proceeded to remove it similar to the popular online flash card trick).
THE POINT is, it just so happens this was on the Disney channel and it was a promotion for a new "Disney Channel Original Movie" (Which I can't remember the name of) involving magic. It is going to air this Friday. I don't think I'm too happy about this, because it combines real magic tricks (an oxymoron, but you understand what I mean, magic available at a magic shop) with computer animation. (SHODDY computer animation). Any thoughts on this? If I see it, I'll let you know how it is. (My expectations for this are LOW). |

The movie is called "Now You See It". I think it looks interesting. I am not a huge fan of Disney channel stuff, but I think it could have potential. I saw a nice preview and it does not reveal any secrets of any of the standard effects that are performed. As for the special effects, it is about a kid who supposedly has "real" magic powers. That could cheese it up a little.

If you've been reading MAGIC magazine for the past few months, they've mentioned this movie several times in their news briefs section. Magic Times has also been writing about it recently. I'll agree that most Disney Channel movies are pretty bad, but they've had some (I haven't seen any for the past year or so) ok ones. I think one of their movies (Color of Friendship) was nominated for some award.
Anyway, I'll probably watch it whenever it comes out but it does look a little cheesy. |

I am taping this movie as I am at work when it aires, but I am looking forward to watching it. As it does look a little cheesey, keep in mind that this movie's main audience is kids anyways so don't let that stop you from watching. I am just intereseted as to what real effects will be included in the movie and how well they will be performed. I did see on Disney Channel this afternoon about the salt shaker thru table trick, but c'mon! There's no need to complain that they are showing this. My uncle who is not a magician by any means showed me this when I was a kid. I can't say that everyone knows this, but a vast majority can easily figure it out.

Cheesy, sure. But I like cheese.
Of minor interest to the magical community was the movie's setting at a place called, if I'm remembering correctly, "The Magical Mansion." While obviously modeled on the Magic Castle, there's not much similarity. The film showed a bunch of traditional stage magic props and illusions without exposing anything. (Well, except for the mechanism of a levitation device built into a chair). I didn't see the salt shaker bit. I assume that was just a promo piece they did this afternoon before airing the film. Heck, if they turn it into a regular series (and I have no idea if they plan to), as long as they have good technical advisors (like Jon Racherbaumer) I'll tune it in. What did the rest of you think? |

"And soon, his powers will be mine..." *Enter the evil laugh here.* Perhaps the movie was not exactly a blockbuster, but interesting.

I saw it last night, and thought it was fun. Just for fun. Even my beloved wife, who hates magic watched the last few minutes. Nothing was revealed.

WHOOPS I completely forgot to watch this movie, I've been a bit busy lately I guess. I'll try to catch it later this month. On a side note, has anyone seen the new season of Surreal Life?

I saw the movie. I watch the Disney channel with my kids. I was disappointed in the movie. The female lead was like fingernails on a chalkboard.......very irritating. I thought the magic powers stuff was pretty lame. I think the art of magic will be done in by this film..........or not.........

One thing I thought was clever was the second challenge. Each of the magicians was given a wand with a famous magician's name on it. He/She was expected to do research on the magician and produce one of their most famous effects. One person got Harry Blackstone and did a lightbulb levitation. One got Alexander Hermann and produced a series of rabbits from a hat. The third kid got Harry Houdini and tried to vanish an "elephant," but it went wrong. Sadly it looked like both effects were mostly "Disney Magic" and not stage magic. Oh well.

I watched the movie. It was a cute film. I think the reason we older folk found it a little lame was basically due to the fact that it was based more or children's entertainment. There were some cheesey spots here and there, but overall, it was good and there was no exposure to any effects.

Ahhh yes. Harry Blackstone's famous floating light bulb. A classic!

The kid doing the Long Distance Spinner with one card after another into the audience reminded me of Brian McBride on the first World's Greatest Magic special.
By the way, what happened to those? TJ |

They dissapeared. LUCKILY I taped them all (except #1 but that one was no good anyway because that space shuttle trick was so......bad). I'm selling them for $1000 each because you can't find them anywhere else. PM me if you want to buy.

Ah yes, the lead actress was quite annoying. The "real magician" kid was alright. That girl just bugged the heck out of me though.
