I would appreciate comments and opinions as to which of the two effects, Pavel's Blendo Full of Holes or Mr. Laflin's 3 Knots Off Silk, is better?
I already have a blendo effect so would the blendo full of holes be redundant and therefore these two effects should not be done in the same set? If they are redundant, is the blendo full of holes effect much more entertaining and powerful than a regular blendo effect and therfore a regular blendo effect could be elminated from the show? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each of these two effects? Thank you very much. Best regards, Michael

Many here would probably say: it all depends on presentation. And they would be right. Having said that, Pavel's Blendo Full of Holes is a full routine that, as you know combines two routines: knots off two silks and blendo. This is not just one of my favorite Pavel routines but one of my favorite routines, period. I have it in the colors it comes in (royal blue and red) and I made up my own with white and red to go with another silk routine that is red and white, red and white feather flowers, and a red and white botania. If you get it, you will be able to use the tube it comes with (a combination Massal/Ghost Tube) for other routines. You can use it for Duke's Dye Version. I am also going to use it for a Mismade Flower routine. Or you can use it with whatever you come up with.
Laflin's routine is a shorter routine (again, depending on presentation). It's based on Knots Off Silk, which was originated by Pavel, at least according to one of his videos. Kids laugh when you put on a perplexed and/or embarrassed look when the knots fall off. And the laughter continues when you open the silk and show the hole(s) in it. Jimmy

Hello Michael and Jimmy,
I have done the knots off silk from Pavel for about twenty-five years. I don't do mine with the holes in the silk because next I produce a dove from the silk. I like it because it can be done anytime in the show. It is also one that can take two minutes to five minutes, depending on what is needed at the time. Another reason for not using the holes is because sometimes I have two knots and sometimes I have three. That is determined by how showtime is running. With the solid silk, doing both in the same show would not seem like a repeat. My version of SoftSoap results in holes in my silks that require "Spot Out" to repair them. This has also been in my act for thirty years. I don't need two "holes in the silk" tricks in the same show. If you are a person who can really mug it (use facial expressions) to entertain an audience, Knots Off Silk is a great trick. I never do it with patter, even if I have no music. I sometimes do it with a 36" silk because of what follows. It is a very versatile tick. With the right silk you can go from Knots Off Silk to Zombie or Devil's Hank. Yes, I'm sold! I went to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa (forever and ever). For years I maintained contact with an art professor from there who moved to Ohio. His name is Harold Rice. Thanks to him, I must have every Blendo effect known to man. I do use them, but I like to change around with them for my own sanity. (However, I've noticed that changing the colors in MisMade Flag really sets people off!) Changing up the blendos allows me to stick to a customer's or host's theme (Happy Anniversary!, Merry Christmas!, Roll Tide!, Zero On-The-Job Injuries in 2005, Ride a Horse! etc.) and my color (St. Pat's Day, team colors, Halloween, etc.) and routining needs (card silk, dragon, etc.). Being locked into the red or blue would not give me the variety I need. Otherwise, that would be fun too! Now, if you have any money left what can Jimmy and I talk you into next? Enjoy! Hi Michael:
It's been awhile since I've seen Pavel's Blendo full of holes, but I believe it uses some type of rolled up paper dye tube. Is that right? The two silks (red and blue) are put into the dye tube and out comes the Hole Blendo. If this is the case, I don't think you should be concerned about doing this effect in the same show as a normal blendo. I really liked the Pavel blendo when I saw it years ago. I also like the standard knots off silk. So, I'd say if you're looking for a longer routine, go for Hole Blendo. Ron |

I use Blendo full of holes in every show I perform and it always gets great reactions! A real crowd pleaser! Oh yeah, not like most magicians, I perform this as my FIRST effect and do it to up beat fun music. I believe that this combination of sight and sound (the music), my audiences get to see me perform and I use a lot of body movement and facial expression during the routien, thus it is entertaining, magical and funny in a clever-way. (I hope). Anyway, it always is a hit and gives me time to all so, judge my audience and seek for potential volunteer's while performing it. I have gone thru three sets already and I just keep ordering more as they wear-out from performances. In many of my comment cards that come back to me, the customer many times mentions this effect so, guss I will keep it in the show. "IF IT WORKS....DON'T FIX IT!
