I second Sinful and Pyro Perception. Both of those effects leave your audience Dumbfounded. Can't go wrong with either one. IMHO...

As far as getting a shocked reaction goes. Some of the effects that I do that get that kind of reaction is:
(No particular order) 1. Card Warp 2. The pothole trick 3. Scotch and Soda 4. String through stomach (No latex here!) 5. Any effect using the Osterlind BCS. 6. Other mentalism effects using a NW or the CT. Earlier people were talking about the flaming book. One version of that effect that always seems to work is the flaming Bible. Great context for the flame. I don't see where this would be practical with any other book. |

I agrre with a lot of you that 2 card Monte is a really good one, also Scotch and Soda. But, if you want a real jaw dropper, I'd say Stimata by Wayne Houtchin beats them all. I think this is the ultimate mentalisn effect. No gimmicks, the only props are a business card, which can be borrowed, and a pencil or pen. This ALWAYS get the best reactions. Heres a quick description. you have the spec think of a name, then tell him to write it on the card, then fold it up and hold it. This is all done while you are far away. Once its folded, you tell the person to grasp your wrist, and squeeze hard, leaving red marks on your arm. You tell them to think of the name while squeezing. When they release, the red finger marks they just made are visible, but then, very slowly and visibly, the marks change into the first initial of the person they were thinking of. No gimmicks!
Cant get stronger then that. Brian

The twisting arm illusion is pretty good. Especially if you throw in a couple bonecracking sound effects in there. Yikes!
(I'm double-jointed, and I can actually twist a arm around 360+ degrees like that. :O)

My most shocking reactions...hmm...
Stigmata for sure, just the patter and the way I present it tends to help (I try to do it in darker places, possibly with access to candles, the coffee shop I work around a lot keeps candles for the restaurant they run upstairs, so I like to light candles and really play up the more "Evil" feel I can get out of the effect. Sinful of course is great. I did it once where I took two of the people I was performing for and had them follow me into the store to buy the can of soda and than watched me get my 25 cents in change before I did the effect, so they were totally blown away... Everything else has been mentioned, but I do an original effect involving a palm reading theme/tarot theme with playing cards. This has only been enhanced since I started using Black Bicycle cards. (They really do add a lot) More recently I started doing a version of cutting to the aces, people seem to love that one since it's in thier hands the entire time. I'll think of more later. Maybe. Allergy meds have my mind all woozy.
A Trick? Well yes there are quite a few "tricks" I can do, but alas there are women and children present. Find me later.
