Unless it's a promoter you regularly work for who knows you well enough to talk to you straight, I think we all know what's really meant by "I'll call you back". Even if that remark was made in the full intention of taking down your name and number and making time later on to go to the trouble of ringing back this new guy looking for work (unlikely) the chances of it actually getting done amongst the million other little jobs that comprise their daily routines are roughly zero.
You have to keep calling until you get lucky and catch them when they have the book in front of them, then (provided you haven't done anything to make them swear never to have anything to do with you again) you can probably get a gig, because you're helping them do the job they have their minds on at that moment. If at that point they're still making excuses, maybe it's time to admit defeat and move on. |

When it comes to marketing techniques, the question is just BEGGING to be asked:
Helle: What exactly is the premise behind the "Drag Queen" magic show, and who are the your clientelle? I have never imagined there is a show like that out there. I assume it's a marketing ploy, but I'm not really sure ... |

Helle: What exactly is the premise behind the "Drag Queen" magic show, and who are the your clientelle? I have never imagined there is a show like that out there. I assume it's a marketing ploy, but I'm not really sure ... I'm not a particularly aggressive and competitive person, I prefer to find a creative niche to exploit rather than compete with other people on a "bigger, better, harder, faster" basis.. not that I don't work hard at what I do (I do), it's just my biggest strengths are creative and I like to use those to get a reaction. I have no interest in doing things I find boring or that are already being done better by someone else. My transvestite/drag escapology act came about partly just to see how it would go, partly to do something to distract from the dreaded "sad desperate loser getting tied up for a living" image and because I couldn't think of anyone else doing it (there've been drag magicians, just not drag escapologists; I think the job is too butch and physical for most drag queens and too effemenate for most escape artists). On taking the act onstage it got a huge reaction straight away, even more so once I added a huge, masked male assistant to the formula, and when something gets attention from the word go you have to ride it. Having a unique act means I can get away with a lot (people remember the gimmick if nothing else), but I'm not satisfied with that, I want people to be curious about the gimmick and then floored by the act, it's the only way to get longetivity. I'm still developing the act on the pub level at the moment, but hopefully will be stepping up soon. The circuit I see for this act is alternative cabaret (I'm working on setting up a night here in Leeds as a base vehicle), nightclubs, student audiences, drag/gay clubs, hen nights and anywhere else after something different. Although there's obviously an implied innuendo, the act isn't really blue so I can tailor it as required easily. I still don't know for sure if there's a lucrative market for what I do (you never do until you try), but I'm having, and intend to have, a heck of a lot of fun finding out. |

There was an actor who hired a helicopter and dropped several hundred copies of his picture/resume over a studio. Not only did he not get signed by the studio, they sued him to make him pick up all the pictures.

Yes, it's a positive reaction, but it wouldn't be if I had nothing to back up the gimmick with or if I was in any way unpleasant about my stage performance. Doing drag well is a fine line; a certain level of innuendo and gregariousness is expected (it's meant to be a larger than life character), but that crosses the line into self indulgence really quickly if you're not careful.
My theory (which is the basis for the "making life interesting so you don't have to" slogan I use) is that in presenting an outrageous or different persona in a positive manner people are drawn to it because it's nice to know that the world is a bit more interesting for all these wild, fun things existing. They might dream of doing such things themselves were it not for the practical and social requirements to conform in order to make a living and raise a family. My job as I see it is to keep that dream alive for those that have it, and to provide them with a more fun and interesting lifestyle without them having to take on any of the risk or consequences themselves. I've never been good at conforming anyway, every time I tried it was a disaster. So if my role is "misfit", I like to make as good a job of it as I can. |

Okay, this is off-topic -- in that it relates to non-Magic marketing -- but it is SO bad I think it deserves posting:
I came home one afternoon several years ago to find a gardener's truck driving slowly down the street; at each home, someone inside threw what looked like a tiny bag of litter into each yard. I picked up the "litter" thrown in front of my house, and found it was actually a business card and a flyer wrapped in a sandwich bag with a little rock for ballast. At least Carlson's turkey paratrooper idea got his little radio station noticed... Leland |

Hey, Nicholas:
How about spelling it out for us blokes whose water circles the other way 'round the drain...why is that bad marketing? |

When I was a kid we visited the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and when we came out they had plastered giant orange and black flourescent stickers on the bumber of our car (and all of the rest of the cars) with "I've Been to the SOO LOCKS" printed on it. (We spotted many cars with similar stickers on them all over Michigan for years) The glue on the bumper sticker was so strong that when we finally removed it some of the chrome came off.
