Is it possible (and I have heard it is) to

make one’s own invisible deck? If so, how?

Yes it’s possible, but since the deck isn’t very expensive anyway, save yourself the time and just pick it up.

The main reason a person might make one would be to use a very specific card back design, for a theme, that is not readily available. A friend, who posts here, made one of Jack Daniel's cards, antique looking, for a specific purpose. The problem is, the cost would be greater than the cost of just buying the deck. But since you do not know how to make it anyway, you need to buy the first deck, then you can go from there. If you buy one you will know what you need and you can post here and we will tell you what to get.

And, indeed, if it would be worth it or not.

And most magic dealers would sell this roughing spray, would they?

Some magicians report good results with different types of clear dull spray coatings. Personally, I would get roughing fluid, which you can rub on, from either Cards by Martin or the material called "rough master" from Magic Inc in Chicago. Both sources can be found with a search engine.

For health reasons, best to buy rather than make your own. Most of the sprays contain chemicals which can cause impotence.



I don’t mind suffering for my art, but I’ve suffered enough already!

Most matt varnish type sprays will do. Not sure of the implications in Paul Hallas' post but I've had the snip so not too worried.
If you need more details than that you should buy a deck to see the method.

I think it is well worth buying some RS as its uses go far beyond making an ID. David Regal has a lot of uses and ideas in his "Magic of David Regal" set.

One other thing I would say is that the dealer-bought ID that I owned (before my girlfriend washed my trousers with the deck still in it ) was harder to use. I put this down to them being a bit more economical with the RS than I was on my home-made one.

With my home-made ID I have a much better product that is easier to use.

A £5 can of RS is probably enough to treat 6 full decks or so, so not bad value for money either.
