Does anyone have specific knowlege about putting music to an escape? Can I use any music I want, or are copyright laws against me? How do you find out, and what do you use?

For the most part I record all my own music, though for Helen's act I'm doing mostly cover versions in glam punk stylee; for example, I have a NIN-esque version of Queen's "I Want To Break Free" to go with my SJ escape and a classic rock version of "The Stripper" to go with my chain and cuffs/quick change combo. I've thought about including Bucks Fizz's "Making Your Mind Up" as a gag when an onstage comittee is considering how best to tie me up, but haven't tried it yet in performance.
The experienced pros here will know the legal aspect in the US better, over here I think you'd find most licensed performance venues already pay for a PRS license (PRS being the agency responsible for licensing public performances of copyrighted material, I think the US equivalent is ASCAP), but if you're promoting yourself on the street or elsewhere you'd probably need a license of your own to play it by the book. It gets really hairy though if you want to use footage of your act for any purpose, as then there's a whole new raft of distribution licences involved, and having to dub in some alternative music is not only a pain but kills the atmosphere of the footage stone dead. So if you can get some good copyright free music (there's plenty about, check the ads in amateur movie making magazines for a start) or better still find a friendly muso to write you some specially you're much better covered. Maybe you could come to an arrangement with a band who'd be up for some extra exposure. |

In the US, if you are performing in a school, a library, or other non-profit, there is no ASCAP/BMI fee necessary by the venue. Other places, the venue must have the license. Watch out for the taping issue that Helen raises.
One possible solution is a "sound-alike." Get a band or some music students to play a tune that sounds like the one you like. Change the lyrics for sure. There are currently court cases testing how close these can get to the original. If you use electronica, a DJ can create a custom mix. You might not have to pay cash. Maybe they want a show, a benefit for their favorite venue or charity, some artwork, whatever. Then there is just buying royalty-free music as Steve and Don suggest. Yours, Paul |

I am SAMRO licensed so I don't need to worry about what music I use. I use any music with a good beat to get the suspense going.

These are all good suggestions, are there copyright issues on the classical pieces? I have always loved entering to Thus Spak Zarathustra (sp) (2001 theme). But I would be concerned about it appearing on a video tape.

With the old masters, there are no issues for the music itself, but there are for performances by a specific symphony.

Donster, did you really mean that last post? (snicker)
Perhaps I am mis-understanding you, but I took your last post to sugest I should just go around to everyone I meet here in california and ask if they can help me. I suppose you are right. The music industry does focus here, but there are of course several million pepole employed in this state that are not in the music industry. ROTFL Sorry for the sracasm, but the idea is hysterical.
