This is indeed an awesome book! It is also available from http://www.hocus-pocus.com so now there are two places to get it, as well as the local magic dealers can usually order it.

Is there a need for props for most of the effects? I like to stay away from props when possible. About how much of the book uses props, percentage wise?

Not too sure, but it is pretty prop heavy. Lots of stuff is commercially available, though.

Greg, you left out one important point---USE IT!
Trouble with re-reading it too many times is there is too much solid stuff to use, and sooo many avenues of rework Larry leaves open to make it fit individual styles if one thinks about it. Gregg

Of course, Larry Becker describes a lot of effects there, using wallets, boxes, etc.--- not at least in the section where he put many of his marketed effects. However, there are also heaps of "in betweens" there, using cards, billets, etc. Osterlind's Radio Sum Total, which is described here, is one example. One of the absolute top notch stunners here, Clearly Predictable, is another. What's in use here, except for the envelope with the prediction, is a freezer plastic bag on a stand, and a jumbo deck. The tendency of the routines is definitely more against mental magic rather than purist mentalism. However, there is a lot (and I, mean a LOT) of great, very usable, audience tested and practical routines here. As others have said before me, you can't be without this book. Sven

I hate to spoil the party, but I was a bit disappointed from the book. Yeah, there is a lot of info there, but a lot is very prop oriented. It was just not my style. I don't say it is not good, because some would really love items like Casino Royal and the like.
For me it was just not it. I found it more mental-MAGIC. There are some gems there. For example I don't know anybody who didn't like Sneak Thief, which is pure genius. Just before you buy, make sure Larry Becker's style fits you. N. |

I have to add my praise for this book. IMHOo the material is first class entertaining mental magic, very useable and very effective.
Sure, there are some prop-heavy routines, but the book really inspired me to think about the routines and how they could be developed. I'd say buy without hesitation! Paul

"Stunners Plus" was for me an enjoyable read if only for its inclusion of the ads for Becker's many commercial effects it contains. I have to tell you, though, that I'm a huge fan of Becker's "World of Super Mentalism" series. Even though I skip right past the many effects which (unsurprisingly) utilize playing cards (yawn) the books contain a plethora of other great mental effects and, even though these books are probably not as well known as the more glitzy "Stunners Plus," they're a terrific resource for performers of mentalism and mental magic.

Larry Becker's material is first-rate. One of the consistent characteristics of his routines is entertainment value. He knows what plays in the real world.
Regarding the argument of mental magic versus mentalism - some of his effects can be made a little more "spooky" if you give it some thought. And if you choose not to do that - well, who cares? The bottom line is that audiences love the material. If you present Casino Royale, for example, in the light, mental magic way, the spectators will still see you make three, seemingly impossible predictions. I believe, partially depending on some things like your disclaimers and choice of other effects, that they will still credit you with extraordinary skills that they have not trained themselves to accomplish. Stunners Plus will give you a tremendous amount of ammunition to impress the most jaded and skeptical audiences. |

This may be a dumb question but here goes...
Is there a way to purchase just the literature (such as lecture notes, DVD, performance manuscript, ect.) to Becker's "Casino Royale?" I don't do mentalism in my act; however, I feel this would be a solid performance to add to my show... Thanks for not laughing... Bryan |
