I read in another thread regarding leather chop cups that dice are "more appropriate" than balls as leather cup implies "dice cup." I like doing chop cup but do not like the knit balls and am always looking for alternatives in the 3/4 - 1" range. I have "chopped" rubber olives, crumpled dollar bills, and baseballs. I see ad's for tennis balls. Any other ideas? and resources?

I don't see how dice would or would not be more "appropriate". It comes down to a matter of taste. I do agree, I am tired of the knit style and would like to see some alternatives.
Mike Roger's used to make a set of chop mini baseballs, but they are no longer being made (anyone have any leads where I can pick up a set?). I like the rubber olives (AKA The Jiggernaut), but how does that play? I mean it makes sense with the jigger, but in any other situation? Hmmmm... I love the Mini Don - it looks like a shot glass. I wonder how "chopped" ice (pun intended) would play???

I don't agree that you have to use dice at all. Depending on the cup, I think that felt balls look just right. More of a natural look, which jives with the natural look of a leather cup.
http://www.theambitiouscard.com/cups/brownSoftLoadedSet.jpg Of course, some leather cups look like dice cups and in that case, dice would be quite appropriate and even preferred. http://www.theambitiouscard.com/cups/blackRedWhiteCup.jpg Monkey-fist balls look great and obviously go well with a leather cup. http://www.theambitiouscard.com/balls/purpleMonkeyFist.jpg I've even made chopped olives http://www.theambitiouscard.com/custom/olives/olive3.jpg

Frank,
Did I hear that you have (or may in the future) chopped dice? Once I get this stacking thing down with your combo dice cup, it seems more appropriate that I continue with dice for a chop cup routine rather than switch to balls. Or is there a potential handling problem since they aren't round? I can imagine them clinging flush to the cup and not releasing as easily. Also the "rattle" may not sound the same.

I have Top Men working on chopped dice.
I'm hoping to have two models: Economical and Precision. The economical dice will work fine but the gaff might be somewhat detectable. This is for people that are not picky but would still want gaffed dice. The precision dice will be made from precision casino dice that look a lot like these... http://www.theambitiouscard.com/cups/blackRedWhiteCup.jpg This would be for those that also do dice stacking and want a very legitimate die that could match their dice stacking dice. I don't think there's a handling problem with the dice. They are being designed to release as a ball would. Here's one more pic of felt balls with a leather cup. http://www.theambitiouscard.com/custom/olives/f9_1_b.JPG

I've seen people use sponge balls with cups and balls. It should be easy to make sponge balls, just an exacto knife and super glue.

Go to a craft store like Michael's or JoAnn. They should have small foam fruits, plastic eggs, and a million other things you can jam a metal shim or magnet into. I have little foam lemons, one of which has a magnet in it. For a chop cup, I have a lemonade cannister (drink the lemonade first!). Final load is a full-sized lemon, of course.

There is a chop cup that uses billiard balls, and one that uses tennis balls. You can also use a rolled up dollar bill.
I think that when you start worrying about the balls more than you do the routine, itself, that your concentration is being misdirected. Chopped olives are great. Chopped onions would be nice, but I think they would tend to be messy.

Many years back Al Goshman did sell small spongeballs for Bob McAllisters spongeball*matrix*, using 2 playingcards.
The size of these balls would be ideal for a Mini Don from RNT or the Mini Chop Cup from Morrisey. To those few friends who have seen my handling of the vanish of smal balls, these sponges would be ideal for those having slight problems in handling/palming them the way I do..

Perhaps the gimmick could be attached with a bit of magician's wa* to a borrowed bill before it is crumpled into a ball and used. Just remember which side of the bill the gimmick is attached to as you unfold and remove it.

You don't even need to do that. Prepare your own bill in advance by rolling it up with the gimmick inside of it. It is easy enough to switch it in at the beginning of the routine and switch it out at the end.

Any updates with magnetic dice? I have been playing with Rik's chop cup, and to me it looks like a hand made dice cup. Logical?

I have been using a dice chop cup for about 20 years. I opened with it in the magic castle close up gallery last season. The cup was made by Johnny Plumbo and it is hand made.
The dice I made myself. The reason I like the dice cup is because it is a little different than the chop cup and ball. And I like closing with the cups and balls. The dice make the cup a little different. The routine I use is the David Roth Chop cup routine. As an opening effect for close up it works out great and is fast - and gets to a punch climax. I hope this helps.

I just posted on how I made chop dice and a routine with a glass vanish for a chop cup routine in the secret sessions section of the Café.
Enjoy...
